Real Time Ultrasound

Real time ultrasound (RTUS) provides us with the unique ability to see the deep abdominal, pelvic floor and deep lumbar muscles known as the core stabilising muscles that contribute to low back pain and are often difficult to feel. These muscles are important in providing support to the spine. Back pain, poor posture, surgery or pregnancy can result in the loss of adequate control in these muscles. The use of RTUS has been shown to help reduce the recurrence of low back pain from 80% to 30%, by assisting in teaching the correct method of core muscle activation.

At Flex all initial Pilates consultations utilise real time ultrasound to assess abdominal and back muscle function. This assessment allows us to tailor a very specific and individualised program, specific to your needs.

Flex review Pilates consultations involve the re-evaluation of abdominal muscle function using RTUS to ensure your continued improvement. It allows your physiotherapist to progress your home or Pilates program accordingly based on the results of the assessment. Pilates review sessions are generally required at least every eight weeks during your program.
